27. Chlorosis, “A Disease Pertaining To Virgins” And The Green Children
Chlorosis was mentioned before as a reason for the children’s green skin and their ties to the “Babes in the Wood” story, a deeper look into this disease; reveals a complicated argument to prove the account of the Green Children as true.
Chlorosis, in Latin; Morbus Virgineus, and in English “disease of virgins” was a disease that had common symptoms with anorexia and anemia. It is said that it was caused by hysteria in young women and could be cured by having relations with their husbands after marriage.
Of course, this was the 19th century so the disease didn’t seem so far-fetched, however, the disease yielded a yellowish tincture to the skin, as opposed to the stark green complexion that the children had; disproving that they possibly had it.
