2. Julia Hunt Catlin Taufflieb (1864-1947)
Taufflieb was an American Socialite and philanthropist born in Maine to an affluent family. Owning a residence in France; in 1917, she transformed her Chateau d’Annel into a 300-bed hospital, that was nearest to the front lines.
Her ingenious action prompted other Americans who owned residences in France to do the same. She became the first American woman to be a laureate of the French Croix de Guerre and Légion d’honneur.
