5. The Discovery of the Rosetta Stone
One of the greatest discoveries of ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs is the discovery of the Rosetta Stone. Parts of the Rosetta Stone were found by a French soldier while digging through Egyptian sand. The stone consisted of inscriptions that helped define modern Egyptian hieroglyphs.
The writing on the stone was in 3 different languages, called a decree about the king – Ptolemy V, 204-181 BC. Archaeologists believe that these stones were placed outside of temples in Egypt.
