15. Easter Island
Imagine 900 gigantic stone statues of identical faces lined up on an island. Anyone would think ‘why are they there’? ‘who built them?’. Well, this is exactly what you’d think if you visit the Easter Islands.
Located in the Southeast Pacific Ocean, this tiny island was and is inhabited with native Rapa Nui people, but the date of their arrival on the island and the cause of their civilization’s collapse is still a mystery. But perhaps the most mysterious thing about it is the massive statues that were built by hand almost 1000 years ago.
