26. Data Privacy Movies Uses Video Without Consent
The Netflix-produced documentary ‘The Social Dilemma’ has been the talk of the town lately. This is because they’ve spoken about the addictive nature of social media, and how invasive it is – monitoring your personal information without your consent, and selling them to advertisers so they can target their ads to you.
Ironically, in the creation of this documentary, the movie’s team violated the same ethic that they claimed were being flouted by social media companies. They used a video snippet from a Tiktok user named Chelsea Gilliland where she was speaking like a conspiracy theorist. Turns out, that they used the video without her consent, which also prevented her from clarifying that the video was satire.
