Solving crosswords has become a morning habit for countless people the world over, but things were not so when it was launched. In the early 1900s, the invention of crossword was met with a lot of skepticism and critique, especially by the New York Times. 

The newspaper roundly dismissed crosswords by calling them a ‘primitive sort of mental exercise’. So it’s extremely ironic that the NYT crossword, introduced in 1942, has become one of the most famous ones!
