The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines Protest as a solemn declaration of opinion and usually of dissent, or, as an act of objecting or a gesture of disapproval. Usually, the term is applied to such demonstrations against authoritative figures or bodies that explode into a public outcry against certain norms that the people no longer accept.
