18. Cropping Of Ears
Cropping is a punishment that involves the removal of a person’s ears. It was rarely performed alone and was usually accompanied by pillorying and branding the accused.
Variations of cropping could be standalone where the accused’s ears would be sliced off with a blade. Sometimes the cropping procedure would have the victim’s ears nailed to a pillory so that their body movements would eventually cause the ear to tear off.
If ears are nailed to the pillory and don’t tear off, the victim would have to have their ears torn off manually.
