8. They Did Human Sacrifices To Please The Gods
This is where it gets really bizarre – the Mayans used to indulge in human sacrifice as part of their religious rituals. Why? Because they believed that blood contained a ‘life force’ that could nourish the Gods and make them happy.
There were different types of sacrifices, some in which the heart was directly cut out of a still-alive person. In others, the victims were thrown into a well. In the case of droughts, they used to cover the victims in blue paint before the sacrifice, hoping to please the rain gods!
