18. They Wrote Amazing Books (That Were Burned By Europeans)
The Mayans had a rich literary culture, and they wrote several books using hieroglyphic symbols. We call these books the Mayan codices, and they mostly talk about the Mayan beliefs, philosophies, and Gods. They used the soft inner bark of the fig tree to create the paper and folded a single long strip of paper into an accordion-like shape to create the books.
Unfortunately, the Spanish conquerors burned and destroyed most of the Mayan codices when they invaded their lands. As a result, only three or four of the original codices have survived until today.
