2. The ‘Smell of Death’: The Origin of Catacombs
The reason why Paris the catacombs came about is quite a gross one! So back in the 18th century, the cemeteries of Paris had started to practically overflow with dead bodies, and there was no space left anymore.
In fact, the nasty stench and odor from the rotting corpses had spread all across the city! This was not only extremely unpleasant for the citizens, but turned into a public health hazard as well. IT was said that with that many corpses overflowing in the cemeteries, the milk sitting in homes began to curd just by the stench!
As a result, the city authorities decided it was time to find another safer and more spacious area to bury the bodies in.
