12. They Were Used During WWII By Both Sides
While the fact that catacombs exist was widely known during World War II, what most people don’t know is that these tunnels were used not just by the French, but ALSO by the Germans for strategic advantage!
The French used the hidden underground network to group together, strategize and plot attacks while hiding from the Germans. On the other hand, the Nazis also recognized the value of the catacombs and went as far as building underground bunkers inside them to hideout.
In fact, some of the remains of these bunkers still exist to the present day, like the bunker that is located under the Lycee Montaigne School.
