11. Some Farmers Used It To Grow Mushrooms
In the list of mind-boggling things that have happened inside the catacombs, we’re sure you never would’ve thought of this one! Back in the 19th century, a man named Monsieur Chambery noticed a bunch of wild mushrooms growing in the underground tunnels, and this gave him an idea.
He thought, ‘why not use the tunnels to grow mushrooms?”. He soon got permission from the Horticulture Society of Paris and got to work with growing button mushrooms! soon, several other farmers followed his lead and began growing crops after crops of mushrooms there.
It is thought that the humidity, darkness, and cool temperature of the tunnels played a big role in making it an attractive spot for mushrooms. But one can’t help but think – did the bones buried there also unwittingly fed the crops? Eeeks!
