#7 She Had A Hard Life
After Mary’s father died of tuberculosis in 1810, Richard left the Anning family to pick up the pieces.
Being the sole breadwinner of the family, Richard left his two children and a widowed wife expecting another baby.
The Anning family went through a tough time trying to make up for the financial loss brought about by their father’s death. The only skill that the Anning family possessed was fossil hunting.
So, Mary and her older brother Joseph went on to collect fossils while their mother sold them to wealthy tourists.
In 1816, Joseph started apprenticing at an upholsterer, and then Mary took over the fossil hunting part. It was the only way the family couldn’t die of hunger and also pay back the debt.
