2. The Middle Passage Terrors And Zong Massacre
The journey of an African slave to the New World encompassed three stages; each one bearing a severity of its own. However, the infamous middle passage is recognized as the peak of inhumanity that the slaves were subject to.
A heinous occurrence that has scathed this period would be The Zong Massacre. In late November 1781, the captain of the slave ship Zong committed a sinister act upon African slaves by throwing them overboard, leaving them to drown in the Atlantic.
The tactic of throwing slaves overboard wasn’t uncommon and was due to food shortages onboard. On record, 130 slaves were thrown into the sea.
