The Hindu Code of Manusmriti is arguably one of the most restrictive codes to be ever written in the context of women rights. Written sometime between the first and fourth century, it declared women to be the ultimate property of their husbands.

Once widowed, a woman was not allowed to remarry and would often be forced into performing “Sati”– an ancient practice where widows would sit atop the pyre of their deceased husbands and burn with them.
