During the 17th century, the Puritans became a strong political party and enforced greater sanctity over Christian practices. As a result, it was in a constant battle with King Charles I, who, besides indulged in extravagance, had a catholic wife.
The friction between the Puritans and KingCharles I culminated into a civil war in the U.K. The Puritans passed a law in1642 forcing people to fast on Christmas, which then aggravated into a complete ban on celebration of Christmas since 1647.
