25 Strangest Deaths In History That Don’t Make Sense

Willed Cannibalism: Bernd Brandes (9 March 2001)

#3 Willed Cannibalism: Bernd Brandes (9 March 2001)

Bernd Brandes was a German engineer from Berlin, who willingly put himself up to be slaughtered so that he could be carved up and devoured by cannibal Armin Meiwes. Meiwes posted an advertisement on a cannibal forum, to which Brandes answered, he was the only one who didn’t back out from the deal.

On the 9th of March 2009, the two met up and with Brandes’s consent and engaged in gory cannibalistic acts. Due to a variety of complications and major blood loss, Brandes was kept in an ice bath, thereafter, he was slaughtered by Meiwes. Over the following ten months, Meiwes resorted to eating Brandes’ corpse, which he was later busted for.

Meiwes was arrested in December 2002 and was convicted on the 30th of January 2004 for manslaughter and was sentenced to eight years and six months in prison. It is reported that Miewes became a vegetarian after his sentencing.

The short film; An Appetite for Bernard Brady (2005), directed by Chris Mangano and written by Toddvan der Ark and Chris Mangano, was inspired by Brandes’ demise and focuses on telling the story from the victim’s perspective.
