Georgy Dobrovolsky, Vladislav Volkov, and Viktor Patsayev were Soviet cosmonauts; of the three, Dobrovolsky was the commander of their Soyuz 11 spacecraft.

While attaining the honor of being the world’s first space station crew aboard Salyut 1, the three men lost their lives because a valve was accidentally left open, thus causing asphyxiation. They still hold the record for being the only humans to have died outside the Earth’s atmosphere.
