5. Jane Toppan: Jolly Jane
You wouldn’t really expect someone nicknamed ‘Jolly Jane’ to be a serial killer, would you? Born in 1854, Jane Toppan was a bright, well-liked nurse at the Cambridge Hospital, where she worked. But her sunny demeanor hid a terrible dark secret.
At the time of her arrest, she confessed to killing 30 of her patients. She apparently enjoyed watching her vulnerable, weak, and frail patients dying before her eyes. She was in fact quoted as saying that her ambition was to kill more helpless people than any other person”!
